Oscar Hammerstein opened the theatre on 42nd Street in 1900 and named it the Theatre Republic. This was to become the heart of the theater district in New York. Some ninety-five years later the New Victory Theater became the first historic theater to be renovated on the block. The New 42nd Street is an independent, nonprofit organization which was founded in 1990. The New 42nd Street is responsible for seven historic theaters on 42nd Street

and also operates the New 42nd Street Studiossm. This is a 10-story building made up of rehearsal studios, offices and a 199-seat theater, The Duke
