Thanks to its historical background the Antalya region enjoys a rich culture and ethnography. In addition to the characteristics of settled cultures, the local people also synthesised the characteristics of the yörük (nomadic) culture, thus establishing a unique culture of their own. The migration of the local people from the shore towards the uplands on the Taurus mountains because of the excessive temperature during summers created a need as such, forcing them to produce the needs of the yörük culture in addition to the products grown on the coast. These people, owning herds of sheep and goats before everything else, first produced felt tents from the wool of these domestic animals in order to shelter themselves on the uplands and, alongside this, specialised in the production of animal produce such as milk, butter and cheese. They dried various fruits in the mountains and made jams and pickles with them, and made molasses from grapes. (more…)

A SHORT HISTORY OF ANTALYA

The Antalya Region has always been settled, ever since the Paleolithic Age untill today. Since there are names of this region mentioned in Homer’s Illiad, it is obvious that there was an indigenous people called Pamphilio living in in this region around 1200 B.C. The region later was under the sovereignty of the Lydian Kingdom, the Persians and Alexander the Great. The western part of Pamphillia was acquired by the King Attalos II of Pergarnon in 2nd century B.C. and the king founded a city on the western coast of the Mediterranean Sea and gave his name to the city, “Attalia”, today’s Antalya. The city was subjected to the Roman Empire after death of Attalos III and to the Byzantine Empire beginning from the 4th century. As of the Seljuks’ conquest of the city in 1207, the Turkish-Islamic period began and the region came under the sovereignty of the Ottoman State towards the end of the 14th century. (more…)

Introduced for the first time within the frame of 42nd Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival, the International Eurasia Film Festival achieved a great success and gained its individual character as an acclaimed film festival. More than 200 films of every genre, length and format from different countries all over the world are screened as a part of the whole event.

44th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival
This year Antalya, the fruitful soil of the ancient mythology is embracing the Cinema, the mythology of modern times for the 44th time. Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is the first national film festival organized in Turkey for 43 consecutive years; this prestigious national event has celebrated and supported the Turkish Film industry through its film competition and annual Golden Orange Award Ceremony.

As one of the longest running festivals of Europe dedicated to celebrate the cinema, it became a multi-dimensional event of international identity, accommodating International Eurasia Film Festival and Eurasia Film Market since 2005. (more…)

Tale heroes reborn in sand sculpture exhibit in Antalya

Click to enlargeTurkey’s second sand sculpture exhibition will kick off on June 20 in Antalya’s Konyaaltı Beach Park with the theme of “Arabian Nights”. Sixty sand sculpture artists and designers from 14 countries including the U.S., Netherlands, Denmark, Argentine, Spain, Ukraine, Ireland and Turkey will sculpt the sand in the event organized by ProSandArt.

The exhibition will cover 8,000 square meters and feature many themes of tale heroes including Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, The Adventures of Sinbad and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. The sand is specially brought from the Antalya’s small holiday town of Lara.
